“I don’t know if I can go back,” I told my husband.
“It was so intense today. I’m scared to go back tomorrow,” I explained.
It was June, 2014. I was in the middle of intensive week long in person hypnotherapy training that met all day, everyday.
I had loved my experience as a hypnotherapy client, but had no idea what I was getting myself into as a practitioner.
The day I came home thinking that I would quit, we had gone over trauma, disassociation & parental abuse with a live client session. That was when I witnessed something so profound and so out of my comfort zone that it made me doubt my own ability to hold space for someone with similar background.
“How would you feel if you quit now,” he asked.
I hadn’t thought about that. I was just reacting on my immediate response to the experience, not how I would feel afterwards.
So, I spent a moment thinking about my future self.
It was very clear that Future-Kit at that time would feel relieved temporarily, to be followed with a regretful, self-disappointed Kit. She would not feel very good about not finishing something she started. She would wish she had not quit.
“Not good,” I replied.
“What’s the worse thing that could happen,” he followed up with another question.
“I don’t use it,” I quickly knew the answer to this one.
“Will you be okay with that,” he asked.
“Yeah,… but I know I will.”
“Okay, then you should go back tomorrow,” he nonchalantly concluded our conversation.
Yes, I went back the next day.
Not only was I glad I had completed the course, but I can say that my holistic health practice as well as my own life have completely changed for the better since that hypnotherapy training.
I use it all the time, with or without the knowledge of my patients/ clients, with transformative results!
When you are close to quitting something big or small, ask yourself (or have someone else ask you) simple questions:
- How would you feel if you quit now? Let your future self answer this.
- What is the worse thing that could happen? Be totally honest.
- Will you be okay with it?
